UNESCO Declares Bengali To Be The World’s Sweetest Language

UNESCO has declared the Bengali language to be the sweetest language of the world.

Bengali is one of the major languages of India, and the main language in the state of West Bengal in eastern India. It is the mother tongue of the Bengali community of India, i.e. the community to which I belong.

Bengali is also spoken in the tiny country of Bangladesh, a neighbouring country of India. In fact, in Bangladesh Bengali is virtually the sole spoken language, and enjoys the status of the National Language.

I have always been so proud that I have such a sweet as well as rich language as my mother language. And today that pride got a huge booster.

However, my pride in and love for my language will never make me look down upon any other language of this world. Rather, I have (and will always have) a huge respect for every spoken language in this world, as each of them has enriched the human civilization in one way or the other.

Bengali is also spoken in a tiny..??? SHAME ON YOU!! you put all focus on India and intentionally made the part of Bangladesh sounds less prominent.. SHAME ! chotolok ...
do you know how many millions of people in Bangladesh, and do you know the history of 21st February? International Mother language day?
BANGLA desh is a land of Bangla and not... a tiny state of India that speaks Bangla which is your West Bengal. Broaden up your mind dada..

Dear Anonymous,

I am really sorry if I have hurt ur sentiment. But u have completely misunderstood me. I had no intention to humiliate the beautiful country of Bangladesh by referring to it as a tiny country. Being tiny is nothing shameful, and I am pretty much aware of the beauty of Bangladesh and her people, as I have been there twice. And yes, I know the significance of 21st February (Bhasha Andolon), and the origin of International Mother Language Day.

Lots of love for u, my brother.

Instead of getting so hyper you should realise that the people of Bangladesh are no different from those of West Bengal... Our motherland was partitioned and all you can do is crib about being big or small... Shame on you in fact!

Broaden your own mind!

Did the dear Bangladesh-i friend ever realize that without the intervention of the Indians during the Bangladesh War what its existence status would have been? They might not have been there to boast about even being an independent country.

Khair ul Alam said...

Satya you have raised an emotive topic. India took the full price of its intervention/interference whatever you would like to call it. Still I'd say it is better to be independent than having to gloat about your masters. The truth is Bengalis in India don't count as far as India is concerned. Joy Bangla!

Khair ul Alam said...

Anonymous I don't think Raja Basu meant it in the way you mean. He seems to be a proud Bengali, perhaps his choice of words may not have been perfect. The actual CHHOTOLOK is Satya and he should be condemned for his ignorance and/or his bigotry.

Hi..I am the one who made first comment, Well Raja Basu...Thank you very much for your comment. Sorry for my misunderstanding. I was emotional on your unintentional use of words. But You know many Indians do that intentionally. Satya is the example. You raised a historical question...Indian intervention and the existence of Bangladesh, well,..ask yourself, ask to India, how much helpful and cooperating is India to Bangladesh and its others neighbors?

Cheers for Bengalis- let us be proud

Debashish said...

umm...India is quite helpful towards it's neighboring countries...now it can't go and supply nuclear weapons to pakistan can it ?!! But anyways...EAST or WEST, BANGLA is the best !! absolutely LOVE miles and ayub bachhu !!

Khair ul Alam said...

Debashish, to suggest that India is helpful towards its countries is a BIG joke.
I agree that India can't supply nuclear weapons to Pakistan (half of the weapons won't fire anyway), but in the same token Pakistan can't stand on the sidelines and clap for India's nuclear achievements.
I am happy to see that we agree that Bangla is the best - this is from the heart. Bengalis reject slavery of Pakistan or India.

Raja Basu said...

Dear Khair,

It seems that u suffer from serious deficiency of information and common sense.

To begin with, by making a remark like "to suggest that India is helpful towards its countries is a BIG joke" u have proved urself to be either a bad follower or a biased follower of current affairs. I do not want to pain myself by giving u an account of what India has done for her neighbours like Bhutan, Nepal, Mauritus, and other countries including Bangladesh. All I can say is that if Bangladesh were helpful to her neighbours, then it would not have given shelter to ULFA terrorists of India, who have found a safe heaven in Bangladesh.

Secondly, by making this childish remark that "half of India's nuclear weapons will not fire" you have simply proved urself to be completely ignorant of India's nuclear prowess, which ur Bangladesh will take decades to achieve (if at all it can achieve it). No, I am not showing disrespect to ur beautiful country. I am just articulating the fact. And please do not try remark on Indo-Pakistan issues, about which u seem to know nothing.

Equally laghable is ur remark "Bengalis reject slavery of Pakistan or India." First of all, India simply has no wish to enslave Bangladesh, or intimidate it by any means. We have far better and productive things to do. And secondly, through that remark u r trying to imply that it is only the Bangladeshis who r called Bengalis, and not the Bengalis of India. This is a gesture which is audacious, childish, uncultured and idiotic, all in one go.

Sorry to say, but being a perfect idiot, u r a burden for ur own country that u r so much fond of.

Lojjar Kotha. Je topic ta niye alochona shuru hoyeche ta holo - 'Bengali is declared as the sweetest language in the world' - and here we find Bengalis from two sides of the border using such bitter words against each other. Can we not speak to each others as Bengalis and not allow our nationalities to cloud our vision? I am a proud Indian and a proud Bengali living in London. I have loads of Bangladeshi friends and all my supply of Maach comes from Brick lane where the people never looks at me as someone from a diffrent nation but as a fellow Bangali. Can we not have this pride of ethnicity along with the justifiable pride on our respective nationalities?

Dear Raja Boshu

Abar phire eshechhi aami Banglar taney. Friends, after a long time I thought of having a peak here again to see what is new with my beloved Bangla, only to be confronted with an obnoxious post of Raja Boshu again. It seems he likes not to talk about Bangla but about his masters. Obviously, he feels more pride in talking about them and their achievements rather than any small achievement of bangla or bangali. As for me, I feel equally proud when Bengalis achieve something no matter how small, no matter in which geographical boundary they are situated.

Raja Boshu, the subject of ‘India helping its neighbours’ was raised by you not me. I was responding to your comment only. I can see you didn’t like it, that’s fair enough, but that is my opinion anyway. By attacking me personally, it does not strengthen your argument in any way.

To answer your next line, I can give you countless documented examples of India doing just the opposite of what you suggest, to these countries. Clearly, we have opposite points of view on this matter so let us not dwell on this. Let us talk about Bangla.

Here again your obsession with your masters provoke you to belittle a proud Bengali state. You are comparing India to a country that is much smaller in every respect, and you feel proud of your master’s achievement compared to this small but proud Bengali nation. Shame on you! Lojjar kotha, chhi chhi!

Why do you not compare your masters with a country of similar size, how about China? Why do you not use China as the yardstick to measure India’s achievements, not just in matters of war but in every other matter?

So now hopefully Raja Boshu has got a taste of his own medicine. Let us not behave like some of the chhotolok we see here. Let us be proud Bengalis or Bangalis and accept that we will probably never agree on everything and we do not have to.

Abar dekha hobey!

Khair ul Alam said...

Raja Boshu, you accuse me of being a burden on "your country that you are so proud of". Firstly, I can see you are making some assumptions about my country which is childish. Secondly, show me where I have said anything promoting Bangladesh! In fact, show me anywhere that I have even used the word "Bangladesh". You won't find even one mention, because I didn't come on this forum to talk about Bangladesh. You came here to promote your masters. I am here for Bengali. You mentioned Bangladesh several times mostly in derogatory terms; and you mentioned your masters India in haughty terms just as the CHOTOLOK Satya did. And Debashish unnecessarily brought Pakistan into the discussion with an uninformed and uncalled for comment. I only responded to that. So the boot is on the other foot dada; you are the one who is showing your fondness for a particular country, and good on you if you want to do that. But don't accuse me of it.

Anonymous said...

Infact,in India, within next 200 years time period, bengali language will only survive in libraries and Bengalis will be extinct. That's a

bitter truth which we have to accept and for that not only British, Nehru and Gandhi are to be blamed, but ???

Halalla lulla gulla khakha khan

Khair ul Alam said...

I doubt that Bengali language will ever be extinct. Perhaps there is some sarcasm lurking behind your statement Anonymous; but I take your point. The upper middle class seem to have abandoned the use of Bengali language for everything except for the very basic use. In Bangladesh there is a tendency or desire to speak Bangreji. In West Bengal it is increasingly taking the shape of a khichuri of Banghindi and Bangreji. Alas, it is the expatriates who seem to realise this loss more than those who live there.

Well, the controversy begun with the word 'tiny', isn't it? so whats the wrong in it? Bangladesh is a tiny country in the geographical sense. As we always say, see japan is such a small country(in the geographical sense), but see its achievements. So whats the wrong in it? Anonymous took it wrongly and everything started. This basic diversified look evoked partition, which you can see it not yet fully overcome. Please stop all these and be proud of your mother language

Khair ul Alam said...

I can't follow shan's logic here. I don't agree that the controversy started with the word "tiny". It actually started with foul utterances of two people. Bet let's accept for a moment that it is about "tiny" so what is wrong with being tiny, that is shan's point.

It is all relative isn't it? Why make Bangladesh the example? India is tiny compared to Russia and Canada. So why not say the tiny country of India?

No, the argument did not start because of Bangladesh being tiny. It came about because a couple of people were "tiny" in their heads.

Dear Khair ul Alam....

I'm pained 2 say dat...

1) BANGLA...originated frm SANSKRIT, a very old traditional language of the so called Master-INDIA.

2) Bangladesh Originated from the Master-INDIA.

3) We feel really very Proud 2 b called ourself as INDIAN and of course BENGALI....
We stay in India with proud, honour and respect, I mean...we r not enslaved by Our Indian fellow men...so STOP USING D WORD "MASTER" FOR US....
We r d proud citizen of INDIA, enjoy equal rights...freedom....and literally do whatever we want.

4) Ya u may use d "Master" word for yourself because without INDIA'S intervention or be more precise as said by u INDIA'S interference, u wud not b able 2 breathe in ur free Nation and get ur Independent Status. Its damn hard bitter truth.

5) This is very interesting thing that India never supported any kind of TERRORISM. Moreover My Great Nation don't even dare 2 punish those culpits. This is a huge greatness of INDIA...

6) India never indulged in nuclear weapons for aiming other nation and blowing them...
Just for her own protection and solving the future energy crisis using nuclear techniques.

7) India or INDIANS including Bengalis...always appreciate other countries efforts no matter big or small. U can find Raja Basu described ur nation a beautiful Land...but in any case u did not...instead u accused.
Thats the greatness of INDIAN BENGALIS and INDIANS too.

8) India always tried 2 help, spread peace and respected other countries views in living in harmony, but Her arrogant, stubborn, heartless, neighbors always interrupted in this cause. So dont ever dare to call my MOTHERLAND a big joke.
We never dare 2 show our power in terms of anything on some weak and tiny country like yours.
hum hamesha apne barobar walo se hi ladte he....aut tab dikhate he...ki kitne weapons chalte he aur kitne zabardast awaz aate he unmese...

9) Now...Ur nation also hv many things....which are self-sufficient for satisfying a small population.
Like u hv sufficient source of water...evergreen land...gud climate... But instead ur nation did not progress and is in search of help alwayz....

10) Last but not d least...
Give respect...take respect....
"JOY BANGLA....JAI HIND....."

Khair ul Alam said...

Dear Azad
How presumptuous can you be? I never used the word “Bangladeshi” (to be honest I detest the word) and I never said anything to promote Bangladesh here. My purpose was to refute the untruths chhotolk Raja Boshu and Satya were peddling shamelessly about their masters.
I have no issue with any Indian or Bengali being proud of India, (we all know chhotoloks always fight more for their boroloks, more than the boroloks do themselves); still I’d say that’s fair dinkum, someone feels proud about their masters, let them be! But to try demean others in the process! That, their masters are the ones doing good for others; and others have to be nomo nomo forever to them! Surely, that can’t be left unanswered. So there I was!
Look at you! Instead of having a go at the chhotolok who unnecessarily triggered this argument, you joined the fray and became personal in your attacks. You had to assume something about the person you are going after. For some reason you felt characterising me as “Bangladeshi” makes it easier for you, without even confirming anywhere in my writings whether I claimed to be a Bangladeshi or whether I even said in anything in support of Bangladeshi. That betrays the futility of your argument if ever there was one.
I have numerous Indian friends and I even speak three western Indian languages, but I am never shy of identifying myself ethnically as Bengali even though my friends would say in disbelief “chal mazaak mat kar!” The point is, most people in the prosperous parts of India are open and can cop criticism, and at the very least can agree to disagree. They generally don’t react the way those people do who don’t matter much in the scheme of things.
Oh, about how bangla originated? I see that you remember your school lesson. Don’t you ever forget it and dare say one day that Bangla originated from Hindi or Urdu! For me, it doesn’t matter how Bangla originated – it’s shoor is in my veins, in my breath, in my heart; it transmits the echoes, as if by telepathy, of generations that spoke the language before me, and reminds me and all Bengalis, that we are the proud people who shed blood for this language. Many people have shed blood for many crazy reasons but we Bengalis are the crazy people who shed blood for our language. Even if many of us don’t speak the language as much as we did, somehow the spirit seems to have survived – bar a few exceptions.
Your point 8 is ridiculous. It is always funny to see and/or hear a Bengali speak Hindi/Urdu when the pretend to be brave or strong. This is just for you, no one else! Before you typed out your thoughtless statements of your masters bravado, you would have done well to read up on the 1962 skirmish between India and China. It feels painful and humiliating but the fact remains that three Inidan divisions were completely routed in a matter of three or four days by Chinese forces. And there are more ... don’t let your emotions take over! You may be disappointed.

Mr. Basu,
I am not undestanding what kind of person you are. A big number of indian population speak in bengali. That's fine. The Bengali is the mother tongue of the whole nation of Bangladesh and the Bangladeshis made huge sacrifice for this language. In the world history the sacrifice of the Bangladeshi people for bengali language to place it in its due position is unprecedented. It seems to me you don't anything about it. Your comment is arrogant and insultive to each and every people whose mother tongue is bengali. I don't know who you are and how I would measure you. But I am sure about one thing that you are a person who does not have any self respect. If you would minimum respect for yourself or any other bengali speaking people you would not talk like this. You are really something.

Raja Basu said...

@Syed Ahmed - Mr. Ahmed, while ur irresponsible and childish mail does not deserve my reply, I nevertheless decided to reply, as silence would have sent this message that I have accepted ur remarks.

To begin with, I am very much aware of the passionate struggle that East Pakistanis put up against the Pakistan govt. for the sake of their mother language, eventually resulting in the birth of the beautiful country of Bangladesh (where I have lots of friends). As an educated person (and a Bengali for that matter) I am well aware of the significance of "21st February", the relentless struggle of 1971, etc. I even know about how a Bangladeshi officer of the UN peacekeeping force in Sierra Leone (in West Africa) ensured that his language is recognized as an official language in that country (I doubt whether this fact was known to u, as u do not appear to be a very knowledgeable person).

However, u and ur fellow countrymen must realize that ur forefather's struggle for ur language does not give u the right to claim yourselves to be the sole or better custodians of the language, with the Bengalis of India playing a second fiddle to you people.

I am sorry for the harsh language that I used in my replies to some comments made by some Bangladeshi readers of my post. However, it is very difficult to restrain urself when u face an unnecessarily provocative remarks. This also explains the rough tome that I have used in my reply to ur comment.

Try to develop some maturity, and also learn how to present ur views in a courteous manner. Rude behaviour will result in rude behaviour. That's obvious.

Finally, there is a far better way to prove ur stupidity. Please do not irritate anybody by posting idiotic remarks on his/her blog.

(Disclaimer: Whatever I have said to this mad guy was directed precisely at him, and not to his fellow countrymen.)

Khair ul Alam said...

Shundor Das, why do you always have to write in capital letters? Do you always have to yell when you talk?

Raja Boshu,, why do you think anyone is claiming bengali to be their own? Syed Ahmed's post had a lot of silly mutterings just as yours, but in all fairness I don't see him saying his countrymen are the sole or better guardians of bengali.

Syed Ahmed, why do you have to attack someone personally and telling us what Raja Boshu is because he is doing a good job of showing us what he is. How do you know he has no self-respect? You could have simply pointed out the silly things he wrote here and let people judge what he is. Now both of you are in the same boat of silliness.

dear, i read some of the comments written by some bodies.but i want to say that actually i proud of my bengali. bengalies have no race no religion.i astonished to see that no one write about the barak bhasa andolon on 19th may 1952 in assam where 11 people shed their blood for our mother tounge in assam before 21st feb held in bangladesh.
i also want to draw the notice of all the bengalies who are muslim in religion that why they used pani fufa fufi apu gosol nasta in spite of jal, kaka, kaki, didi, ,snan, jalkhabar or prata rash ?do they know pani and other words used by hindi people both hindu and muslims.so why we used these words in bengali to prove them muslims.i think all bengalies should think about this matter and shouted for neutral language.bhasar kono jat nai.dhnyabad.long live bengali
